AP polls for the top 25 universities before the start of the season

According to the AP Poll’s Top 25 Rankings, how have all the pre-season ratings accumulated since the poll came out before the 1950 season?

How have the narratives of college football seasons been shaped for more than 70 years? Pre-season polls and rankings.

The AP Poll began rating teams over the course of the season and declared national champions beginning in 1936, but did not spur a pre-season release until 1950—the same year the UPI Coaches Poll was created.

It’s still a strange concept to this day – just as our grandchildren won’t believe there was a time when the playoff system was based on the whims of a small panel of judges – but polls and ratings meant everything in determining the National Champion.

Pre-season arrange all things except anchor them in stone. If you start in the top two, you’ll be in the mix for the national title as long as you don’t lose. If you’re out of the top two to start the season – and sometimes, if you’re not #1 – you need help.

Pre-season polls still set expectations at the start of each season, and the AP version remains the version with the most publicity.

Since 1950, how have members of the AP media viewed the major teams before the seasons? Which schools have the most respect in pre-season football polls by the Associated Press?
