Maxime Cressy ATP Eastbourne

ATP Newport Semi-Final Predictions Including Isner vs Cressy

The final four players are selected to the ATP Hall of Fame Championships in Newport. Home fans will be delighted to enjoy an all-American semi-final to start the day, featuring veteran John Isner against young talent Maxime Cressy. The other match will be just as entertaining with Alexander Bublik’s unpredictability and shooting against veteran Jason Kubler who finally appears to be playing top-level tennis after a career hampered by injuries. Both games are expected to be competitive as the players fight for a chance to play for the final grass court title of 2022.

ATP Newport Semi-Final Predictions

Jason Kubler vs. Alexander Bublik

Face-to-face: first meeting

Kubler is the only player not ranked in the top four to advance to the semifinals. He knocked out top seed Auger-Aliassime in the second round for his first career Top 10 victory and then compatriot James Duckworth in the quarter-finals. That brings his record to an impressive 9-1 on grass for the year, including Wimbledon qualifying.

Bublik has a good record on grass this year and in his career. He can count on his big serve and his shots to confuse his opponents and make them lose their rhythm. This season has seen a good record on paper, although he doesn’t have many huge wins. He beat players he should beat and lost to those he should lose to for the most part. Kubler is an interesting fit because on paper Bublik has a much better CV, although Kubler’s talent and current form compares to Bublik.

Kubler appears to be in dominant form in Newport. He’s only dropped one set in three matches and that’s against Auger-Aliassime. He has yet to make a tour-level final and will be hungry to do so. Kubler will need to focus to get past Bublik whose antics throw off some of the tour’s best players. Bublik’s talent is certainly there too and it was showcased in a convincing straight-sets win over Andy Murray.

It will be very close, with either player likely to come out on top and win. Kubler knows with his career that nothing is guaranteed and he will be extremely motivated to make the most of this opportunity. That motivation combined with his excellent grass game will be what he needs to come out of the gates strong to win the first set and beat Bublik to reach the final.
Prediction: Kubler in 2

John Isner versus Maxime Cressy

Face-to-face: 1-0 Cressy

It will be a rematch of a close five-set first-round match earlier this year at the Australian Open. As expected, it was a serve show with the server winning over 80% of the points. Cressy got the only two breaks of serve in the whole game which was the difference in his win. On a faster grass pitch, serves will be even more exaggerated, making breaks less likely. Isner has played better in tiebreakers, going 22-17 on the year, including 2-1 against Cressy, who is just 20-21 overall. Isner has broken serve three times in his two matches here, while only getting broken twice. Cressy has an impressive four breaks without being broken.

This match could go either way due to each player’s massive serves. Cressy has done better overall in his service games, but that might not matter if he’s unable to make it to Isner’s serve. Isner is more comfortable on grass and has had good results on the surface in the past. Cressy looks in better shape and has shown he can earn those key points in big games, such as his grass court wins this year against Cam Norrie and Felix Auger-Aliassime. Cressy would again find a way to earn those key points and secure his second victory of the year against his compatriot in three sets after earning the only break of the match and sharing two tie-breaks.
Prediction: Cressy in 3
