Barcelona have internally admitted that allowing Lionel Messi to go on a free transfer to Paris Saint-Germain was a mistake, in what is seen as a first step towards eventually luring him next summer, According to an Argentine reporter.
Rumors are still circulating that Messi could leave PSG next season, again on a free transfer.
Club president Joan Laporta has said publicly that he feels he is still indebted to Messi. Laporta campaigned on the idea of renewing Messi’s deal, but ultimately said that was not possible due to the club’s financial problems. The Argentine striker later signed with Paris Saint-Germain.
The report says Barcelona have not yet contacted the player’s inner circle, but this admission from within the club that they shouldn’t have let him go is a clear indication that there is hope to lure him.
Reports also indicate that manager Xavi, who has been a longtime teammate of Messi, has spoken to the player recently and is keen to bring him into his project.
The idea was to sign him in the summer of 2023 and let him play in his final years at the Camp Nou.
