Barcelona should focus on the departures after successfully pursuing the goals

FC Barcelona did an exemplary job of keeping track of the goals. While the risks and rewards of spending a lot of money can be debated, all players are in quality. And they showed a willingness to join the Xavi project which would make him very optimistic.

The club have secured two important free agents in Frank Kessie and Andreas Christensen, a relatively cheap prospect in Pablo Toure, and two big signings in Ravenha and Robert Lewandowski – with Jules Conde apparently on the way.

Again, regardless of whether spending a lot was wise, these were all players the team intentionally targeted, and they beat out other clubs in those endeavours (notably Chelsea).

What is overdue in the transfer market, however, is letting players go.

Significant players moved abroad – Musa Waghi and Rey Manaj have played quite a few first-team matches between them, and that’s it. Ferran Jutglà was also sold, and while he at least had a bigger role on the team last season, he was one of the lowest-earning players on the team.

Francisco Trincao has been loaned again, according to a mandatory sale clause. That’s fine, but then again, it doesn’t shake considering that he was on loan last year as well.

The only big name the club has managed to take to this point is Clément Lenglet. He’s been a regular fixture for a few seasons but has seen himself fall into the flick standings. They managed to loan him to Tottenham Hotspur. Not good for where the player was when Barcelona signed him, but he is good at the moment.

Now the club has to focus on the most difficult cases.

There are a few players that Xavi has not featured on the USA Tour, who should know that they are unlikely to kick the ball next season for the Blaugrana.

Samuel Umtiti almost returned to France, but the deal fell apart. This is the Barcelona player who desperately wants to move. He is tied to a huge contract and will likely never play again for the team. Neto is being linked with a move to Napoli, which would be great as he is currently the third goalkeeper but earns more than a lot of starters.

Riqui Puig and Oscar Mingoza are boys at the academy who didn’t make it last year. They are good players with good potential, and their salaries are not huge. Finding a buyer in Spain should be relatively simple. Martin Braithwaite has reportedly received offers in Spain and England, but is not leaving at the moment. He is a key player at international level for a good team, and has shown that he can score goals for less glamorous clubs like Leganés.

Going forward, there are players in the round but they may need to sell.

It looks like Memphis Depay will struggle to play with Lewandowski’s arrival. Some clubs, such as Tottenham, have said they are interested. He needs to decide where he will go next season. It is still a high-quality player and should generate interest in the market.

Miralem Pjanic has had a tough time since arriving at Barcelona from Juventus and spent last season on loan. Xavi took him on the tour, but he’s a fringe player at the moment. He may need to look elsewhere again.

Finally, Frenkie de Jong is a controversial issue. There are doubts he might accept a salary cut and stay, but he has been linked with a move to Manchester United. He doesn’t seem to like the idea, even if it would make a lot of money for the Catalans.

Without the team making progress on a slew of these departures, the transfer period cannot be considered truly successful. Reducing the wage bill when it comes to marginal players has been a priority, and to do that, players need to leave.
