Bayern Munich may be a gem in Mathis’ cool phone

A year ago, he was dipping his toe in the waters of Ligue 1 for the first time, not even a professional contract on hand. Now, he’s landed in Bavaria for a head spinning fee with jersey number 9 rumors in store. What kind of player will Bayern Munich get from Stade Rennes at seventeen-year-old Matthijs Tell?

Goal.com takes us back to his days at Montrouge FC (a development club near Paris he joined in 2019):

Thomas Perlett, his coach at the time, vividly remembers meeting the Rennes native for an interview with him and his parents. “When I received him, my team was second in the league (National U-17) and I didn’t necessarily need his position. And he answered me: ‘No problem, I’ll prove and work,'” said the current reserve assistant at Stade de Reims.

He added, “The next week, I saw him in a session, the rest of the group was a bit patronizing because he’s 15 but he was really interested in her. He wanted to get ahead and learn. Eventually, I saw the other kids saying he was very persistent.”

That was when he was playing in central defense – yes, that’s right. With this report, defense was where Ren first discovered and signed him to play, but Tel’s ambitions and vision for his future were rapidly changing:

“With my crew, we thought he had dribbling and quick qualities and not being able to take advantage of them was a waste for him, so we made him play on the side,” Thomas Burlett recalls. Rennes was able to see the damage as the U17 team, who had been fighting with Montrouge in the playoffs, lost a goal… from the future hard block.

Wren, his acclimatization was fast. During pre-season when the midfielder needed more numbers, Rennes coach Bruno Genesio called him up – and he was so impressed he wouldn’t bring him back to the Palace.

Nowadays, Tel is firmly entrenched in attack sites, if not confined to any particular site. He impressed a wide range of scouts, but even they couldn’t decide what would be his best show. What is clear is that everyone sees an exceptional player in the pipeline: fast, dynamic, technical and intelligent. A complete footballer whose experience will bolster him all over the field…and plays as the 9th for the France youth team.

The nine, of course, is where Bayern seem to be targeting. One striker – goodbye, Robert Lewandowski – one young striker, and the striker’s search is over (in this transfer window, at least). You connect the dots! But is he ready for the lights of FC Hollywood to glow?

He will have a lot of things going for him. In Sadio Mané and Serge Gnabry, Tel has two world-class players of the same caliber – two fast wingers who score goals (former?) – that will show him they are being done like a pro. He has a young and dynamic coach with a mandate to grow the next generation at Bayern Munich.

He has a club. Expressive, ready to go with everything. The €20m bonus deal is hardly a take-and-see and Bayern only got it by agreeing to a (potentially significant) sale percentage. So the bosses see him as someone to keep – because if they ever had to sell, Wren would demand a hefty fee.

It’s a big bet on Rekordmeister to make. However, with how fast he’s already climbing, there’s no telling how far he’ll go.
