Dominic Thiem explains how much returning to winning ways means for his family

Former world number 3 Dominic Thiem says winning games also meant a lot to his family and coaching staff as they were also going through a tough time when he was sidelined due to a wrist injury. Thiem, 28, injured his wrist at the Mallorca Open in June 2021.

Thiem was out much longer than expected when he returned to action last March. After losing the first seven matches since his return, Thiem is finally starting to find his game as he reached the quarter-final in Bastad last week before advancing to the semi-final in Gstaad this week.

“No one really talks about it but it was also a difficult time for them (the family). Obviously during the injury they were horrible for a long time, and also they probably didn’t know when I could come back, when I ‘ I’m back in a good way.

So I think they’re also enjoying it a lot now that the wins are coming back. Giving a lot of energy from outside, for me, that’s obviously super important and that’s a big support,” Thiem said.

Thiem on his partnership with Nicolas Massu

After parting ways with longtime manager Gunter Bresnik, Thiem signed Massu at the start of the 2019 season.

A year and a half later, at the 2020 US Open, Thiem won his first Grand Slam title. “We’ve had incredible success together and then we’ve also been through a really tough time now. But I think it makes a good relationship to get through those tough times and for him it wasn’t easy because he didn’t. Wasn’t there often.

Obviously he was at home in Chile, not knowing how my wrist is and my progress, not being able to do anything. He didn’t start again until I was able to knock. So I guess it was a tough time for him and I’m also very happy for him that good results are coming back,” Thiem said.
