Frances Tiafoe revealed a funny anecdote about one of her mixed doubles matches with Serena Williams. At the 2019 Hopman Cup, Tiafoe and Williams represented the United States. Against Switzerland, Tiafoe and Williams faced Roger Federer and Belinda Bencic in the mixed doubles match.
Federer was playing Williams and she had a comment that Tiafoe found very funny at the time. “Yeah, I think she’s really funny. Obviously you see how fierce and passionate she is on the pitch. She’s very funny off of it.
Super easy going. I remember when we were playing mixed in Perth, we were playing Federer and Belinda,” Tiafoe said. She is helped by Roger twice. She’s like, ‘I don’t know how this guy gets on me.’
She says, ‘Don’t worry, we’re not going to lose. Even if we lose, I have 23 [Grand Slam titles], he had 20, so everything is fine (laughs).’ I’m just like, man, this is too much. That’s how she usually is.
It’s just kinda funny. This line has always stuck with me. It was quite funny.”
Tiafoe and Williams lost to Federer and Bencic
In the end, Federer and Bencic beat Tiafoe and Williams in straight sets 4-2 4-3(3). That year, Tiafoe and Williams went 0-3 as a couple at the Hopman Cup.
It was the only time Tiafoe and Williams competed together. Meanwhile, Williams’ career came to an end after a US Open third round loss to Ajla Tomljanovic. Tiafoe has spoken several times about the impact Williams has had on her tennis career.
“Serena means everything to me. Especially in the black community and around the world, she’s an icon. I don’t think I would do what I do without her, to be honest with you,” Tiafoe said of Williams.
