Golden Gophers honored to be part of Pennsylvania’s ‘special’ White Out tradition

INDIANAPOLIS – Penn State fans might not have been thrilled when it was announced that Minnesota was named the Nittany Lions 2022 White Out opponent, with many expressing a desire to see a certain traditional force fill the role. But the Golden Gophers sure loved the news, and they’re clearly honored to be a part of college football’s greatest game.

Minnesota travels to Happy Valley on October 22 for a game that will begin at 7:30 p.m. at Beaver Stadium (TV will be announced). It will be the first match between the two teams since Golden Gopher, ranked 17th, was stunned by refusal. 4 PSU 31-26 in Minneapolis in 2019 and the first time they’ve played at University Park since their PSU 29-26 overtime win in 2016.

“The White Out, I grew up as a football fan in college when I was a little kid, that was one of the games I always watched to watch”, Mariano Suri Marine He said on Big Ten Media Days here Tuesday. “These are the kind of games that everyone dreams about. For the chance to play in that game, this game will be really special. It will be a moment and a memory that I will remember for the rest of my life.”

“That’s cool,” Defensive Back Tyler Knobin added. “This is one of the most iconic games in college football. I remember when I was younger, I made a goal for myself to play Happy Valley once in a White Out game in Pennsylvania. I always saw that game and thought, ‘Wow, that’s crazy.’” All these fans are dressed in white – they must be crazy. So I’m excited that I’ll get a chance to experience that this year.”

Minnesota coach PJ Flick He took charge of the program in 2017, and has never coached or even watched a game at Beaver Stadium. So when the 2022 schedule came out, he and his wife, Heather, dared to ask if the Gophers could be called PSU’s White Out competitor.

“Because I’ve never been to Happy Valley for a game, we said, ‘How cool would it be to go to Pennsylvania, but, two, at White Out?'” he recalls. “You have to kill two birds with one stone. … Because you get to experience it, but you can also train it, which is what you dream about things like that.”

offensive line John Michael Schmitz He insisted, “We are not going to let circumstances dictate our behavior during that match. We will prepare for that. But definitely excited for the opportunity to be there – especially to experience that game. Just looking forward to it.”

Of course, given the way Minnesota fans and players celebrated after beating Penn State again in 2019, the Nittany Lions and their 107,000 ardent supporters will likely be looking forward to it too. Sori-Marin believes all of this could lead to more recognition of the nearly forgotten trophy that goes to the winner of every game between the PSU and Gophers – the victory bell for the conservatives.

“We’ve come a long way as a program and we continue to build on it under coach Flick,” he said. “You look at the 2019 win against Penn State at home – the fans stormed the field – and that was one of the best games of the college football season and one of the biggest upheavals. Being a part of that football game was massive. And now that rivalry is starting to come back. – With the Victory Bell (governor), that’s what makes it exciting. So having a chance to play for the Victory Bell at White Out would be really exciting.”

“I know our players will be excited,” Flick added. “We have a lot of matches until then, but I know this is something everyone is looking forward to.”
