Google may be working on a new high-end Pixel phone for 2022

Google showed off its upcoming flagship phones, the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro, during this year’s I/O keynote. At the time, the company gave us a glimpse of the hardware and confirmed that the phones will feature the next-generation Tensor chipset. Although Google has not revealed any details about the upcoming Pixel phone, a new leak suggests that the company may be working on another flagship Pixel phone for 2022 with better cameras than the Pixel 7 Pro.

The leak in question comes from developer Kuba Wojciechowski, who recently shared details about the camera hardware on the Pixel 7, Pixel 7 Pro, and Pixel Tablet. While going through the GS101 Camera Hardware Abstraction Layer (HAL) from Android 13 Beta 4, Wojciechowski discovered another device codenamed Lynx (L10). This device appears to feature the same 50MP primary Samsung ISOCELL GN1 sensor as the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro. However, this is where the similarities end.

The device codenamed Lynx is said to feature a secondary 64MP Sony IMX787 sensor, which can be used for the telephoto camera. Additionally, the phone will also pack a 13MP Sony IMX712 camera on the front. Because Google usually offers older sensors on its flagship Pixel phones, including Sony’s latest flagship sensor and an unannounced sensor that seems weird. Wojciechowski speculates that this could be because the Lynx is an internal device Google uses to evaluate new camera sensors. However, we cannot confirm this at this time.

Besides the Lynx, Wojciechowski also discovered details about the camera sensors on a foldable Pixel device codenamed Passport or Pipit (P7). Although the code does not reveal the exact camera setup of the device, it does mention that the phone will pack a Samsung ISOCELL GN1 sensor, Sony IMX363 sensor, Sony IMX386 sensor, and Sony IMX355 sensor. Note that these details are not in line with previous leaks about the foldable Pixel. However, the two leaks likely point to completely different foldable Pixel phones.

At the moment, we have no more information about the Pixel device codenamed Lynx or the upcoming foldable Pixel device. We’ll make sure to let you know as soon as we learn more.
