In a video that has now gone viral, a British Tesco shopper has revealed that the store has sealed certain packages of cheese inside individual security bags.
The video, which was posted on TikTok by @amberrosegarcia, garnered over 900,000 views and thousands of comments from stunned viewers who couldn’t believe their eyes. However, some viewers who weren’t surprised assumed that the store shut their groceries away to prevent theft amid the cost-of-living crisis.
Shoplifting and the cost of living crisis in the UK
The Tesco location featured in @amberrosegarcia’s video isn’t the first retailer to shut down an everyday grocery. As reported by Insider, an Aldi store in the Midlands, England, has closed its cheese packaging. Asda store in Elswick, Newcastle has reportedly put security stickers on butter pans.
An Asda spokesperson told Insider that it’s possible that the butter was labeled as a result of the recent theft, adding that they don’t see the action as a “inflation side effect.” But many experts disagree.
Prices of food and non-alcoholic drinks rose 9.8 per cent in the year to June 2022, according to the UK’s Office for National Statistics. Tell Andy Cook, Chief Inspector of Police Watchman An increase in food prices will undoubtedly lead to an “increased crime”.
“There are no two ways about it,” Cook said.
Talking to grocerAn anonymous store manager, a British industry magazine, said thieves are starting to target low-priced everyday items. Another also said that they arrested the “pensioner” who was trying to steal the shampoo.
“With the cost of living, people are going to have to start making choices,” said the second manager.
In her video, amberrosegarcia stands in the Tesco cheese aisle and pulls out several security cases to show that the Cathedral City cheese packets have been stored inside individual security bags. The price for the particular brand appears to be 4.15 pounds (about $5) per pack.
“When the cost of living goes up,” wrote @amberrosegarcia in the caption of her post.
Many commentators were stunned by the situation.
