“It’s Tati Castellanos and it’s New York”: Moving next with interest in La Liga?

It is said that Castellanos will soon move to newly promoted Girona side LaLiga, another side of the City soccer group in Europe, but his legacy in New York will live on.

It’s a legacy, of course, of goals, plenty of it–50 in the regular season and three more in the Audi MLS Cup playoffs, as he helped lead New York City to its first-ever MLS Cup title last December.

Only David Villa, the club’s first-ever signing, scored more than Castellanos, who won the Golden Boot presented by Audi a year ago. Now, his 13 goals this season top that list before the end of Week 22.

But there’s more to Castellanos’ legacy, according to interim coach Nick Cushing.

“I think his passion, his motivation and his enthusiasm to work with the team. I think his hunger and his desire to be in the box and be a killer in the box is there, and I think people are falling in love with him because he plays with his heart and his passion,” Cushing said after the game. “He plays for New York. I think you’ll always remember that whether it’s here, whether it’s in another part of the world, it’s Tati Castellanos and it’s New York.”

City fans, who have fallen in love with Castellanos since his arrival in 2018 (initially on loan from Uruguay’s Torque), showed their support on Saturday night possibly in the Bronx. It was a moment of love for a star who had been cultivated in City Blue.

“I think the reception was because of what he did for the team, what he did for the team this season, what he did for the team last season,” Cushing said. “He’s a crowd favorite. So if you bring him out in the game, the audience will show him their appreciation because they love him.

“If Tate walks off the field or finishes the match, he deserves all the credit for the way he plays the game. And if this is his last game, I am really proud of our fans because we gave him a real applause when he came out because he will remember that.”
