Kansas carries Bill Self, Curtis Townsend off-road for July live enlistment period as NCAA case continues

Sources told CBS Sports that Kansas coach Bill Self and his assistant Curtis Townsend were detained out of the way for the live enlistment period in July. Self and Townsend missed the biggest month of college basketball inductions, which came and went on Sunday afternoon without the National Champions leader in nationwide major events.

The Jayhawks weren’t without representation across the country, with assistants Norm Roberts and Jeremy Kiss on the road all spring and summer.

Kansas officials cannot comment on the matter, as the NCAA threatens additional penalties if schools publicly discuss ongoing issues.

Self and Townsend were subjected to self-imposed penalties from Kansas that mark the program’s first collaborative effort as it continues a years-long battle with the NCAA stemming from the FBI’s investigation of bribery and corruption in college basketball recruits. Kuwait University received its notification of the allegations from the National University Sports Authority in September 2019 by Issue a strongly worded reply in May 2020. Since then, Kansas and the NCAA have publicly remained silent on the issue.

Notably, KS has been fighting back fiercely at nearly every claim the NCAA attaches to itself and the program. Kansas faces five first-level allegations, including the lack of institutional oversight, as well as individual level 1 violations against Self and Townsend. Kansas is one of several schools participating in the Independent Accountability Resolution Process (IARP), which was created after the fallout from an FBI investigation. This case was announced in September 2017. Nearly five years later, programs like Kansas, Arizona, and LSU are still awaiting resolution in their cases.

Sources said KS is still awaiting a crucial, long-awaited hearing with IARP decision makers. The NCAA is also in the process of overhauling the enforcement process as part of a larger Division I restructuring with the Transformation Committee.

Absentee Self sparked the conversation in coaching circles, especially since he and Townsend weren’t at the recruitment calendar jewel crown event, Nike EYBL’s Peach Jam in North Augusta, South Carolina. With the weekend approaching and there was nowhere to be seen, speculation increased.

Kansas enters the 2022-23 season after a national championship in early April, its second to Self with the Jayhawks. Kuwait University ranks eighth in the world CBS Sports’ offseason Top 25 and 1.

Instructors will not be able to visit recruits in person again until mid-September. Whether Self and/or Townsend will be allowed to resume full enlistment activities by then. As for how much damage control the move will help in Kansas’ attempt to avoid a heavy penalty from the IARP, industry sources believe that Self’s major suspension and potential post-season ban for the Jayhawks are penalties still on the table.
