Machine Gun Kelly takes his shot at internet critics at Fargodome Show – InForum

Fargo – Kelly’s submachine gun shot Fargodome on Wednesday night, July 27 – figuratively and literally.

The singer had a throng of enthusiastic fans on his feet for 90 minutes which was highlighted by a mobile helicopter, two inflatable guests, and enough firepower to end the internet.

MGK’s passion for the internet—presumably mostly critics, trolls, tabloids, and accounts of his battles with other artists—was central to a quarter of the show. Manifested in a large inflatable form with a screen of a head looming behind the stage, he claimed his authority to put the star “in a box”, saying, “I am the Internet. You are what I say you are. You are a poser. You can’t play guitar. I thought I was supposed to be a rapper.”

This is the kind of mockery that haunts teens – and the 32-year-old appears to be a very successful rapper-turned-rock singer.

Being in a Box was a recurring theme of the show, which opened with a video call from the singer “Stuck in a Box” and needs to be edited by helicopter. MGK came out of a stage behind the soundboard, picked him up the helicopter ladder and climbed onto the stage singing “Born with Horns” above the crowd.

On stage, MGK picked up a pink guitar matching his hair color and the ribbon wrapped around his right hand. The guitar would come and go and when it did, it was dumped on the road outside the stage, helping build the rock star’s image.

When he wasn’t playing guitar, he would either light a cigarette or grab the microphone, causing him to toss in the air every now and then. Again, there was a bit of showmanship, but it revealed how much he sang to pre-recorded vocals at times, thus subtracting any rock star points earned from a guitar toss.

It seems fans didn’t care even the slightest bit to sing along to tunes like “All I Know” and “Ay!” The singer also jumped into the crowd.

He often thanked fans for coming out, and stated how Fargodome was a big step up from his previous Fargo shows. Fargodome doesn’t release attendance numbers, but the estimated 12,000 fans were about three times his previous shows at the Fargo Civic Center.

While he didn’t pack the house on Wednesday night, he did produce a full-size stadium, with nearly a semifinalist being brought to town by Taylor Swift.

On some songs, he thanked the crew for spending the whole day preparing the show and soon after, he shared the love with his band, introducing each member on their own quickly. MGK may be a qualified guitarist, but he wisely allowed AJ Tyus and Sophie Lloyd’s duel to shine, adding a metal crunch to the onslaught of “WWIII” and “WW4”.

The playlist has been pulled from the past few albums, with 13 of the 29 songs coming from this year’s “Mainstream Sellout.” While the bulk of the group offered his latest role in pop punk, he made space for tongue-in-cheek rap songs, such as “El Diablo.”

Editor-in-chief Avril Lavigne is back on stage to join him on a fun run with her tune “Bois Lie”. Surprisingly, fellow co-editor Willow did not return to sing her role in “Emo Girl”. Instead, a large nude woman was panned to the side of the stage and cameras focused on lip-syncing with Lloyd and again when Halsey’s part appeared in “Forget Me Too.”

Willow carried her opening vocals, showing off some powerful songs as she rolled on a 20-minute pop-punk set. And no, she didn’t sing “Whip My Hair”.

Lavigne looked ageless as she rolled a set of eight songs balanced between this year’s releases – “Bite Me” and “Love it when You Hate Me” – and her debut singles 20 years ago, “Complicated” and “Sk8er Boi.”

She encouraged the audience to sing, holding her microphone for several lines on each song, but showed that she still had pipes for the power song “I’m With You”.

I don’t see the Kelly machine gun getting old either. Perhaps in 20 years he will overcome his destructive inclinations and return to a crowded house in Fargodome. Hopefully by then he’s outgrown and overpowered beef with the internet. I’m sure 9.7 million followers on Instagram, 8.4 million followers on YouTube and 16.6 million monthly listeners on Spotify would agree.
