Rafael Nadal: ‘I’m a fanatic’

BBC pundit Boris Becker has placed Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer’s 2008 Wimbledon final in the category of the best 5 matches in history. After losing to Federer in back-to-back Wimbledon finals, Nadal made a huge impact at the Championships in 2008 after beating the Swiss in a classic 6-4 6-4 6-7 6-7 9-7 final.

Federer was trying to extend his dominance at Wimbledon, but Nadal prevented him from winning a sixth straight Championships title. The 2008 Wimbledon final is considered by many to be, if not the greatest Grand Slam final in history, then at least one of the greatest Grand Slam finals in history.

“What I remember most from the 2008 final is how they were able to play in the dark! It was so dark,” Becker recalled of the 2008 Wimbledon final, according to the BBC. “They would have probably only played one more game, the maximum, and then it would have been canceled and we would have had the final on Monday.

“Roger was the favourite, so it was a big surprise that Rafa won” to be remembered! “You have these matches that go through time and people remember them 30 or 40 years later. If you think about the top five matches in tennis, then that would be one of the five.”

Nadal has a dream 2022 season

The 22-time Grand Slam champion opened up about his love for football and watching Real Madrid play in his book, Rafael Nadal: My Story. Speaking about that, he said, “Football was my passion as a child and remains so today.

I can go to a tournament in Australia or Bangkok, and if there’s a big Real Madrid game on TV at five o’clock in the morning, I wake up to watch it, even sometimes if I have a game later during the day . And I will build my training program for the day, if necessary, around the timing of the matches”.

Moreover, he added, “I am a fanatic. My godfather remembers when I was four years old, how he showed me pictures of the shields of all the teams in the Spanish first division, and – to his surprise – I could put a name correctly on each one of them”.

Earlier this year, Real Madrid faced Liverpool in the Champions League final. The match took place at the Stade de France in Paris. The final took place at the same time as Roland-Garros was taking place.
