Serena Williams’ final tournament helps US Open set new attendance record

The US Open has set its new attendance record and Serena Williams’ latest campaign has certainly played a major role. This year, 776,120 people attended the US Open. The previous record was set in 2019, when 737,872 people attended the last Grand Slam of the season.

Going into this year’s US Open, it was pretty obvious that the tournament would have a huge crowd. Three weeks before the US Open, Williams announced that the US Open would be the last tournament of her career.

Williams’ three matches alone drew over 80,000 spectators. The US Open broke its single-match attendance record after Williams’ first-round match against Danka Kovinic drew 29,402 fans. Two days later, a new record was set after 29,959 fans turned out to watch Williams win over second seed Anett Kontaveit.

In the third round – the match Williams lost to Ajla Tomljanovic – over 23,000 spectators were in attendance.

Williams thanked the US Open crowd

After losing to Tomljanovic in the third round, Williams acknowledged the great support she received throughout her final tournament.

“It’s been such a great time today. Not today, but this week, has been really great. So much support, so much love. It was really amazing and overwhelming. And I just feel like that the whole crowd really wanted to push me over the line.

I am so thankful and thankful for that. I honestly think what I will remember most is that my level was coming back. I think I’m really grateful for that. It’s great to be playing at such a high level, sort of improving.

I don’t know how at my age. I think it’s a very good memory for me,” Williams said. Williams may not have won the US Open, but winning two matches was a big effort for the American, who turns 41. years this month.
