Sheriff O’Neill, son of Shaq, signs six-figure contract with G League Ignite, according to the report.

Sheriff O’Neal, son of Hall of Famer Shaquille O’Neal, will play in the G League Ignite next season, According to Shams Al Shaaraniyah. O’Neill, the 6-foot-10 big man, will have a six-figure contract, although the exact details are unclear at this time.

The Younger O’Neill was a highly respected recruit out of high school, and signed to play for UCLA after undoing an initial commitment to Arizona. Before he could play, he was diagnosed with a congenital heart condition during a physical examination and had to undergo open-heart surgery. Although he was eventually acquitted to return to court, he played frugally one season at UCLA before moving to LSU, where his father starred in the 1990s. After two seasons in Baton Rouge, where he also saw limited movement due to foot and ankle injuries, he announced the enlistment – against his father’s wish.

“He wanted me to stay in school,” O’Neill said. “I wanted to improve myself through this. He knows I work with teams. But I’m not going to lie, we haven’t talked about this. I just go through with it. Do any pre-draft workouts; he just got a [Orlando Magic]so it is a different grinding process.

“So, he didn’t want me to do this, and I know he probably didn’t want me to say this, but sorry. We both grew up, and we’ll get through it.”

As expected, O’Neill went without drafting earlier this year. He was able to make the Los Angeles Lakers summer league team, and played six games between the California Classic and Las Vegas events. He averaged 4.8 points and 3.8 rebounds in Vegas, while shooting 44.4 percent from the field.

G League Ignite is a development team/program that competes in the G League and was founded in 2020 as an alternative to college basketball. Potential clients can earn six-figure salaries for training and playing in a professional environment where they receive high-level training, play a limited G league table, and learn life skills such as financial literacy.

Previous notable players include Galen Green (who finished second in 2021), Jonathan Cominga (#7 in 2021) and Dyson Daniels (#8 in 2022). Scoot Henderson, an expected top pick in the 2023 draft, will join the team in 2021.
