The expansion of the SEC and the reorganization of conferences across the country have some fans already feeling depressed about some of the competitions that will come to an end. Tennessee football could lose out on some of its oldest competition. However, with competitions lost comes new ones, and the Vols can enjoy that too.
Dean Strica of Team 247Sports, however, had a shocking proposal for a potential new competition for Team Vols. He mentioned another UT that wasn’t an orange coming to the convention by 2025, the Texas Longhorns. Nobody expects that.
Obviously, due to the nature of the conference, there will be no system or division in the pods on the same side. Your best chance is to have them somehow put together a formula where there are permanent opponents between divisions, but that seems unlikely. This is what was written about this possibility.
No matter how frequently the Vols and Horns clash, it will be a fun road trip for every fan base to cities with plenty of character and football cathedrals that can each hold over 100,000 at full capacity. There’s even a little Texas-Oklahoma rivalry that has been instilled into that rivalry as long as former Sooners quarterback Josh Hubbell remains the head coach at Knoxville. Let’s just hope that the football being played is also entertaining when these storied programs finally meet as conference enemies for the first time. They have only met three times in the past, most recently in 1969.
Despite how likely it is, it will be very interesting for Tennessee football. If the pod system does happen, you can practically see Falls in a section with the South Carolina Gamecocks, Kentucky Wildcats and Vanderbilt Commodores.
Nobody considers Vanderbilt or Kentucky a competition for the Rocky Top anymore, and while South Carolina is already close, it seems that every year except for the last, there is no border or intrastate war there. As a result, it does not look normal.
Of course, the Florida Gators don’t look normal either, UT could end up in a pod with the South Carolina, them and the Georgia Bulldogs, and the UGA looks more normal as long as the Vols can be competitive. However, the most popular suggested capsule are Vols, Vandy, Alabama Crimson Tide and Auburn Tigers.
However, the point of all this is that there is a chance that Tennessee football fans will lose out on the competitions they hold dear, and that would make the rivalry with the Texans worth paying attention to. However, it doesn’t seem likely at this point, even if they have some connections.
