The Wakanda Forever teaser has been dropped

How do you continue in the franchise without a star? How do you survive after an unexpected death? These are the outstanding questions Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, the sequel to the game-changing Marvel smash, which is perhaps the MCU’s most highly-acclaimed entry. It was made after Chadwick Boseman’s death, and required a dramatic rework because its titular hero is no longer with us (and of course it won’t be recast). Judging from his first teaser, in no way will he ignore the loss.

The trailer was dropped at San Diego Comic-Con, and it’s a bittersweet affair, rooted in grief. We see returning faces — Queen Mother Angela Bassett, Ramonda, Shuri Laetitia Wright, Danai Gurira’s Okoye, Lupita Nyong’o’s — but they are reflective, staring heavy at something off-screen, bathed in gorgeous natural light. At last we see it: T’Challa’s face on a mural. We know that he is gone, but he has not forgotten.

But they cannot mourn forever. There is a new threat: an underwater people led by Namur (Tenoc Huerta), who forces them to rise up for battle. The action gradually takes over the humor, even when the characters are mired in mourning. It’s a beautiful homage to the late star, and even in two minutes it might be the most visually magical thing the MCU has produced to date.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever It arrives in theaters November 11th. You can watch the teaser in the video above.
