Trade Rumors: Mitchell, Barrett, Collins, Heat, Stalled Market

Appearing on The Rally (video link), Shams Charania of The Athletic reports that trade talks between the Jazz and Knicks focused on Donovan Mitchell have “stalled” and the two teams have not had contact for about two weeks.

According to Charania, Utah continues to discuss Mitchell’s move, but not with New York. The Jazz is committed to the Hornets and Wizards recently, adds Charania, but it doesn’t look like a potential deal is imminent with any of these clubs.

As Charania observes, many in the league still view the Knicks as favorites to land the three-time All-Star guard due to their combination of draft capital and young players. However, with the caveat that things can change at any time, it looks like nothing is happening on that front right now.

Here are some other trade rumors surrounding the NBA:

  • On his Please Don’t Aggregate This podcast, Bleacher Report’s Jake Fischer continues to hear that the Jazz don’t have much interest in exchanging for – and paying for – Knicks wing RJ Barrett (hat tip to HoopsHype) as part of a Mitchell package. Barrett is eligible for a rookie ladder extension until the start of the 2022/23 regular season, and if he is unable to agree on an extension, he would be a restricted free agent in 2023 SNY.tv’s Ian Begley pushes back on the idea that the Jazz aren’t interested in Barrett, noting his report earlier this month that Utah has in fact entered into talks with New York with Barrett in part of the return package. Sources tell Begley the Jazz were trying to project what Barrett’s extension value might be at the time of those early talks, which is only natural. It’s worth pointing out that these two reports aren’t mutually exclusive – the Jazz may indeed be interested in Barrett, but maybe they got an idea of what they were looking for in an extension and then decided he didn’t want to pay him a big contract in the future. For what it’s worth, Begley says he would refuse to put Barrett in a potential deal with Mitchell if he were the Knicks because he thinks he’s worth more than extra first-round picks.
  • On the latest Lowe Post podcast, ESPN’s Zach Lowe said he doesn’t believe Heat never seriously pursued falcons big man John Collins, but wonders if they could revisit this possibility before the start of the season. “There’s been chatter in Miami, John Collinssaid Lowe, per RealGM. “It’s old. It may be months. I don’t think it was ever really serious. They might see this again.”
  • Fred Katz of The Athletic suggests that the feedback the Jazz received from the Timberwolves for Rudy Gobert may have stalled the trade market for stars like Mitchell and Kevin Durant. According to Katz, the Jazz are looking for a bigger package for Mitchell than they received for Gobert, and the Nets are definitely looking for a massive carry for Durant. This could have a ripple effect not only on teams interested in the two stars, but also on other teams that may be looking to make smaller deals, Katz writes.
