USC chief ‘shut down’ potential Pac-12 expansion: report

How the tables turned.

As the Big 12 conference explores expansion by potentially looking to add the 10 remaining Pac-12 teams, a new report from the LA Times says Pac-12 has been seriously exploring expansion last year by adding several Big 12 teams, but it never came to fruition.

The report says USC President Carol Wohlt spoke during a high-level meeting and was “closed,” with another source telling the Los Angeles Times, “It cooled the whole process.”

The meeting featured three Pac-12 chiefs and athletics directors, according to the report, with Folt sharing her views just 15 minutes into the hour-long show. Volt said she didn’t understand why the Pac-12 was expanding and was surprised that it was even considered.

This Pac-12 meeting came after Oklahoma and Texas announced that they were leaving the Big 12 for the SEC, and the Pac-12 was said to have been receiving multiple calls from nervous Big 12 teams who thought their league was on the verge of collapse.

The Los Angeles Times reached out to Wohlt, and in a statement the USC president said, “We will not respond to anonymous comments or rumours.”

Of course, 10 months later on June 30, USC and UCLA announced that they would be leaving the Pac-12 for the Big Ten beginning in August 2024.

This report comes a day after PAC 12 media day in which Commissioner George Klyavkov took several shots at the Big 12 conference. Kliavkoff was all over the map targeting the Big 12, saying his conference wasn’t sure if they were the ones “going shopping” for the Big 12 teams.

Kliavkoff didn’t stop there, as he had a lot to say about the Big 12 later in his time on the podium. In fact, he went on to claim that the Big 12 were “throwing grenades” at his conference in an attempt to destabilize him.

“I spent four weeks trying to defend against the grenades being thrown by the big 12 planes in an attempt to destabilize our conference,” Klyavkov said. “I understand why they are trying to destabilize us.”

At the end of the day, he also said he had receipts proving that the Big 12 Chiefs were texting Pac-12 Chiefs about joining their league.

But as has been the case this week, it appears that George Kliavkov’s anger has been misplaced with the Big 12, and should instead target the Big Ten, USC and UCLA.
