Venus Williams has paid tribute to her sister Serena Williams as she believes the game will never be the same “without her GOAT”. On Friday, Serena’s astonishing career came to an end after a three-set loss to Ajla Tomljanovic in the third round of the US Open.
Serena may not have crowned her career with the US Open title, but her final tournament certainly didn’t lack in excitement or entertainment. Serena defeated Danka Kovinic and second seed Anett Kontaveit, before falling in three sets to Tomljanovic.
“After 1 year away from the game there is still no one who can approach her level, intensity, excitement, entertainment. There will never be another @serenawilliams, her legacy lives on in everyone she inspired to greatness, myself included!
No one has performed the game, or the sport, like she did. Tennis won’t be the same without its goat,” Venus wrote on Instagram.
Serena Williams: I wouldn’t be Serena if it wasn’t for Venus
In her last tournament, Serena teamed up with her sister Venus for the US Open women’s doubles event.
The Williams sisters, who have won 14 Grand Slam doubles titles, lost in the first round to Lucie Hradecka and Linda Noskova. After losing to Tomljanovic, Serena made sure to acknowledge Venus and the role she played in his success.
“Thank you dad. I know you’re watching. Thank you, mom (in tears),” Serena said after her last match. decades. But it all started with my parents.
And they deserve it all. So I’m very grateful to them. They are tears of joy, I suppose; I do not know. And I wouldn’t be Serena if it wasn’t for Venus, so thank you, Venus. She’s the only reason Serena Williams ever existed, so I don’t know.
Everyone, from Jill to Isha, through my sister Lyn, my husband, Olympia, Jarmere… Everyone in this club there today. Alexis, Kristy, Derrick (phonetic).”
