Zuckerberg says his Instagram feed is about to get worse

Earlier this week, Instagram head Adam Mosseri shared a video on Twitter (yes, ironically) telling people that Instagram will “continue to support images” as many users were complaining about how the platform is pushing random videos into their feeds. However, Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, basically confirmed that Instagram feed is about to get worse.

Instagram feed is getting worse

For many Instagram users, the experience of using the social network that was primarily focused on photos of friends and family has gotten noticeably worse in recent months. This is because Instagram now uses algorithms to display feeds from accounts you don’t follow, but it thinks it might be interesting to you.

And if you thought Instagram might rethink its strategy for the better after these complaints, you might be wrong. During a call with investors on Wednesday, Zuckerberg said The company is planning to “more than double” the amount of Instagram feed content recommended by AI. In other words, you’ll see more posts from people and accounts you don’t know.

According to the CEO of Meta, about 15% of the content displayed to an Instagram user on his feed is recommendations. By the end of next year, that number should rise to more than 30%. Of course, this goes against what Instagram users are asking, but the company doesn’t seem to care.

Instagram should stop trying to be TikTok

The Instagram situation is so complicated at this point that even celebrities Kylie Jenner and Kim Kardashian have put out a plea asking Instagram to “stop trying to be TikTok.” Adam Mosseri then responded to the complaints with a video essentially confirming that the company will continue to spend resources on copying TikTok’s features.

Of course, this move comes as TikTok has grown exponentially while it hasn’t on Facebook and Instagram. Meta’s results for the second quarter of fiscal year 2022 came in slightly less than expected with revenue of $28.82 billion instead of $28.94 billion. The company currently has 1.97 billion daily active users, which is still a lot.

During the call, Meta executives also mentioned that the company is working on new ways to deliver online ads with less user data, as a response to Apple’s app tracking transparency. Earlier this year, Zuckerberg already said that Meta is rebuilding its advertising structure to target iOS users.

Meta shares are down more than 3% since the announcement as investors appear to be frustrated with the company’s direction.
